The power of marine ingredients for our skincare and selfcare

While we already know about the power of plants when it comes to our health and wellbeing, skincare companies - including ours - are also starting to increasingly harness the benefits of natural, marine-based ingredients. And that’s something that was incredibly important to us when we started creating our Love Ocean products. We know that parents want to feel assured that the products they use on their baby and young children’s skin are mild, gentle and chemical-free. Luckily, our oceans are full of ingredients that we can safely and sustainably use in our daily lives. Let’s take a deeper (no pun intended!) look at why marine ingredients are so wonderful…

Seaweed

We’ve been big fans of seaweed for a while now and amazingly there are tens of thousands of species in our oceans. Seaweed contains vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and proteins, all of which are beneficial to our skin. The versatility of seaweed means it can be used for all kinds of skincare products which is why we’ve included organic knotted wrack, bladderwrack and kelp in our LO bubble bath and hair and body wash.

Seaweed is especially beneficial for young, soft skin because it’s high in algal polyphenols and carotenoids which are both strong antioxidants, as well as vitamins C and E, which help moisturise, cleanse and purify our skin. It is also high in magnesium and zinc which can help alleviate redness in sensitive skin.

Our seaweeds are harvested from the remote and rugged shores of north Scotland where the beautiful seawater is clean and unpolluted. Sustainability is at the heart of our ethos at LO and the seaweed we use is hand-cut carefully to allow for re-growth and each species is only picked in season.

There really is no need to use products containing synthetic chemicals when we can use safe, green and sustainable ingredients from our natural environment.

Sea water and seasalt

We’ve also included seasalt in our products because of its wonderful skin conditioning properties. Research has shown that sea water, which contains zinc, potassium, calcium and magnesium, may have antibacterial and exfoliating properties. Deep sea water has been shown to be even more beneficial for our skin because of its high nutrient content. In fact, it has been shown that products containing deep sea water can help ease the symptoms of eczema and psoriasis.

Other marine ingredients which are becoming popular in skincare and self care include marine collagen, algae and oyster shells which can be used in body scrubs and soap.

Our oceans really are amazing and Love Ocean is proud to be doing our bit to raise awareness of the need to protect them.
